Terms of Service

Last updated: June 10, 2026

1. About these Terms

ChessMarshal (the "Service") is operated by Reckoned Force LLC, a limited liability company registered in Colorado, USA ("Reckoned Force", "we", "us"). By creating an account or otherwise using the Service you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

These Terms apply to tournament directors ("TDs"), club owners, and any individual or entity that creates a ChessMarshal account. Players who register for tournaments through ChessMarshal-hosted registration pages are contracting with the operating club, not with Reckoned Force, except as described in section 7.

2. Account creation and security

You may create an account through Google sign-in or email magic-link. You agree to provide accurate information, keep your account credentials confidential, and notify us promptly at support@chessmarshal.com if you suspect unauthorized access. You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to use the Service to: violate any law or third-party right; harass, threaten, or impersonate any person; upload content that is unlawful, defamatory, or infringes copyright or trademarks; attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service or other users' accounts; introduce malware or interfere with the Service's operation; or scrape or bulk-download data beyond what the Service naturally exposes through its public scoreboard URLs.

4. ChessMarshal subscription

ChessMarshal is offered on a paid subscription basis with a free 90-day trial that begins when a club is created. After the trial, the subscription renews automatically at the rate displayed on the signup page (currently $100 per year or $10 per month, set per tournament director / club). You may cancel at any time through your billing portal; cancellation stops the next renewal but does not refund a current paid period unless required by law.

We may change subscription pricing for future renewal periods on 30 days' notice via email. The new price applies to your next renewal; it does not apply retroactively to a paid period.

5. Tournament entry fees and Stripe Connect

Where the operating club has enabled paid registrations, player payments are processed through Stripe Connect directly into the club's connected Stripe account. The club is the merchant of record for those transactions. ChessMarshal retains a platform fee and Stripe retains its processing fee; the net amount lands in the club's Stripe balance.

Refunds for tournament entry fees are at the club's discretion and are processed by the club through their Stripe dashboard. ChessMarshal does not issue refunds for player entry fees on the club's behalf.

6. Intellectual property

The Service, including the ChessMarshal name and logo, is owned by Reckoned Force LLC. You retain ownership of content you upload (logos, tournament descriptions, player rosters, etc.) and grant Reckoned Force a non-exclusive, worldwide license to host, reproduce, and display that content as necessary to operate the Service for you.

The public scoreboard pages your club generates may be indexed by search engines and embedded by you on third-party sites (for example via our WordPress plugin). This is a feature, not a defect: public visibility of standings is part of what running an open tournament means.

7. Player registrations on club pages

When a player registers for a tournament through a ChessMarshal-hosted club registration page, the contracting parties are the player and the operating club. Reckoned Force acts only as the platform that hosts the registration form and processes the payment through Stripe Connect. Refund, eligibility, and event-execution disputes are between the player and the club.

8. Termination

You may delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that, on reasonable investigation, appear to be used for fraud, abuse, or unlawful activity. We will give notice where practicable; we will act immediately if delay would cause harm to other users or to the integrity of the Service.

On termination, public scoreboards from completed tournaments may remain online for archive purposes unless you request specific removal. We do this so historical results and rating-report evidence remain available to the chess community.

9. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". Reckoned Force disclaims all warranties to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Reckoned Force and its affiliates will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, even if advised of the possibility. Our total aggregate liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to the amounts you paid us in the twelve months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or USD 100, whichever is greater.

11. Governing law and venue

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Denver, Colorado, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will post the revised Terms on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Material changes will be notified by email to the address on file for your account at least 14 days before they take effect. Your continued use of the Service after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

13. SMS and text notifications

If you opt in during tournament registration, ChessMarshal sends SMS text messages related to your event (round pairings, results, and round reminders) and to your account (one-time login codes). You opt in explicitly by entering your mobile number and checking the SMS consent box on the registration form; we never send SMS without that opt-in.

Message frequency varies by event and by how many rounds you play. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP at any time to unsubscribe from SMS, and reply HELP for help. For assistance you can also contact support@chessmarshal.com. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

We do not share your mobile number or your SMS consent with third parties, and we do not use them for marketing. They are used only to deliver the tournament and account notifications you opted into.
